DONE! That's it, I quit. If midnightscott has become the face of the scene in DC, count me right the fuck out. This is what we get? After all those years of great parties, the Pricky Paper's first nod to our scene makes us look like the Hatfields and McCoys in capes??? You're shitting me. I cannot countenance being a part of this. I simply can't. Good people being reduced to foils for a fat clown and his cronies? This is our reward for all that hard work? I can't stomach it. I'm sick here. I've had it. No, seriously. I am officially hanging up my headphones, cancelling all my gigs, enough is enough, etc. Retired, finished, kaput. Other cities get Scary Lady Sarah or Emma Cabrera or Cyberina as their public face, and we get Peter Sellers in a cape. Fuck, This. You people can entertain yourselves. Current Mood: shocked |

A Science Fiction Double Feature... crap. “The two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.”
Richard O'Brien would be spinning in his grave... um, if he were dead, which he isn't. |

Woot dot com. Anybody else an avid Wooter? Anybody actually manage to score an elusive Bag o' Crap? Ever? I just went to check the site ( www.woot.com ) and the server appears to be crashed. Is it another Woot-off? Even shirt.woot is crashed. I love shirt.woot -- they come up with some great designs, including the one I'm using as my icon at the moment. :) I confess -- I'm addicted to Woot. I have gotten lots of cool cheap crap I didn't even know I needed. :) Seriously, I adore my Sansa MP3 player, and lots of other stuff. Woot-offs are the best, though, but they really adversely affect my OCD side. BADLY. I mean, the next one will be the BoC, right? RIGHT??? So. What happened to Woot tonight? Anybody know? i'm huge in germany..... anybody able to pull some words of wisdom from this review of my book in literature critic? http://www.literaturkritik.de/public/rezension.php?rez_id=12011&ausgabe=200807altavista does not count. though it's always funny to see four people posting the exact same bablefish translation prepended with "well, my german is a bit rusty, but here's my shot at it...." oh, there's news, there's news. this week i hope to get a chance to write stuff down. Busy day: School, wedding, family So. It looks like I'll be continuing at the same college this fall. I'll be once again working to satisfy my incomplete in Statistics and fixing my new incomplete in this English class (withdraw date was last Monday, dammit). But, all will not be lost. I can simply take some of the same courses towards my degree that I would at the college I'm transferring to. I won't lose any real time, I'll just stay put for another six months. Not terrible, considering the situation. Everybody has been so supportive, and everybody's just thrilled that Papa's still with us. Everybody is also aware that this could change any day, but we're going to work to have some contingency plans in line so I don't have to miss school if/when we have another disaster at home. On the wedding front, I have 45 too many guests on my *A* list. Dammit. This SUCKS. Most people who are supposed to get a paper invitation know about when/where the wedding is happening, and now we have to figure out who to leave out. I am HATING this part. Bigtime. On happier wedding news, my mom, my MoH jonchance, and I went to The Bridal Garden -- a nice little bridal salon that sells donated sample dresses from designers and used gowns from other brides. Proceeds benefit NYC children's charities. Alas, most gowns are true designers' size 10s -- finding plus-sized gowns is a real trick. There were some beautiful dresses there, but only one that actually *fit* properly and that had a square neckline and empire waist that (I thought) made me look like a fireplug. It certainly didn't accentuate my curves, bountiful they may be. I made a couple of self-deprecating remarks about my size, and will no longer do this for fear of the wrath of jonchance. :-D She and I will be cruising the garment district to see what we can find for the bridal party, and perhaps even for me. We drove past some gorgeous dresses in store windows on our way to dropping her off at her transportation home. After that, we were going to stop at my apartment to pick up laundry, but a HUGE accident on Maurice Avenue exit on the LIE made that impossible. So, I simply joined most of my family at my grandparents' house for dinner. There, we got good news from Mama that Papa may be coming home on Saturday. This is *wonderful* news, especially considering he was expected to *die* two weeks ago. That's my Papa -- strong as an ox. He's eating really well now, and kissyface is the norm again. :) It has finally cooled down in the Baked Apple. Right now, it's raining, and it's only 78 degrees in our living room. Hooray! It's supposed to rain on and off all day tomorrow, so I don't know if the Mets game will come off. I'm supposed to work, but I might be off early if they call the game for rain. We'll see. The Neptunalia and The Strega "O God, who with a nod can stir the ocean foam, You Neptunus, who with Your Salacia encompass the lands of the earth, hear my prayer and grant me Your indulgence." ~ Valerius Flaccus Argo. I.194-6
On July 23rd we mark the annual festival of the Neptunalia in honor of, you guessed it, Neptunus Pater, a.k.a Father Neptune or Padre Nettuno in Stregheria. This ancient festival has been observed since anyone can remember, even the Romans. Today we streghe continue this ancient observation in honor of the great god, Neptune, but not in the city wide splendor once seen in Rome. Nowadays, once a year, Clarians make a pilgrimage to a body of water in order to perform our rites. Of course we are not limited to visiting bodies of water once a year, but we do take the time out during the window of this festival in order to commune with our beloved Neptune, who provides us with the secrets of the sea and the magical mysteries of water.
Sometimes we will travel out to the Jersey Shore, but staying there is quite expensive. I'd love to go to Lake Champlain again, as I felt His presence there very strongly during my last visit. We stayed at a wonderful bed & breakfast on the lake, and it was just amazing. What a powerful and sacred place.
This year in light of gas prices and the expense of the shore, we opted to visit Lake Jean in Central Pennsylvania. It's a beautiful spot in a state park surrounded by extensive trails jeweled with pristine waterfalls. We stayed at a fabulous bed and breakfast, which I highly recommend, and enjoyed a side trip to Knoebels, an incredibly fun (and cheap) amusement park set within a cool and comforting grove of hardwoods. We all appreciated that, and Sophia enjoyed the children's rides as well as the lake and waterfalls. She's still talking about it.

Neptune is often equated with Poseidon, and though They share many attributes, Poseidon was much more bound to the Sea than Neptune. Neptune is the God of All Waters. He is the God of the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and streams. He is present through his sons, who guard each body of water independently. Of course each body of water is also blessed with the presence of water sprites who love to play and long-haired nymphs whose beauty is embodied by the waters. When you look out upon a breath-taking view of a watery scene, that feeling of awe and wonder is a gift to you from the nymphs who give life to it.
Padre Nettuno, Neptunus Pater, God of the oceans, seas, rivers and streams. God of lakes and earthquakes. Earth-shaker, Earth-holder, Preventer of Slips, Raiser of Plants, Lord of Horses. May your essence be with us today and every day, Your strength, healing, understanding, compassion, prophecy, inspiration and metamorphoses. May all we do today bring honor You, and may all of our successes be Your offerings, for we adore You!

Lost I know this is something of a lost cause (so to speak!), but I wanted to put it out there just in case... I haven't been able to find my iPod for several weeks at this point. I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, I brought it into an SCA event with me and then left it there, or had it fall out of a bag/basket. Does anyone know of a found iPod or an autocrat who might have been reluctant to advertise such a thing? It's a second-generation in a black leather case, and of course I'd be happy to provide the playlist information to verify ownership! I turned the whole house upside-down -- nothing. Bad enough I don't have all of the sprout's favorite tunes available now, but if I don't somehow get my beloved Jongleur back, the Pennsic drive is going to be a total nightmare. :( Current Mood: distressed |

Pesticide Poisoning We watched Bill Moyers' Beyond Organic documentary about Fairview Gardens today. Michael Ableman, who ran FG back then, is also a photographer. He usually tried to spend his winters traveling, documenting firsthand how other countries/cultures practice agriculture. Comparing those lively photos to the ones of standard industrial farming practices here was kind of gross. One photo in particular was pretty disturbing. Twilight skies over a flat, uniform field with a single tractor in the distance. In the foreground, a migrant worker wearing a gas mask leaned on a hoe. It did not make me want to eat whatever they're growing. The overuse of pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals here is out of control. We can choose not to eat the food made by large industrial farms, but their workers probably have fewer options when it comes to employment. Which is too bad for them, 'cause organophosphates are nasty neurotoxins. :/ --- How to reduce waste at home, school, work, and more. |

The ability to perform on site repair is crucial to the mental well being of my booth babe. :D Alright. In spite of the enormous flop that was LDC, we have enough money left over to give a new convention a try. http://www.crodcon.com/It's a first year, but they're aiming to be big. At the very least, I can say hello to Burton Gilliam again. *lol* Nice man, even if I didn't like Blazing Saddles very much. Current Mood: calm |

Yeah... Yeah sorry I haven't been talkative or keeping up to date on things recently but I've been busy with several things recently - I've been studying for the GREs and I got what seems to be a really good job prospect lately but mostly though the Otaku has been way too hot. It's just way too hot and I've developed some insomnia because of it - I've turned on the Air Conditioning in my room at nights but it's not really helping the insomnia issue.
I've cut out a lot of caffeine and even tried over the counter sleep medication (which have had the effect of me just being awake but with some groggy disorientation) but no dice.
Arg. I'll catch up and write some more soon though - along with getting some projects done.

I've got friends getting boinged! Check it out... my friend shadesonggot BoingBoinged! (Wow... that just sounds DIRTY, doesn't it? ;-P ) Go read the article... it's about what she and others are doing to support a rape crisis center for Blogathon '08. If you can help, please do. It's a great cause. Interesting thing is, 'Song and award-winning SF author Cory Doctorow (founder of Boing Boing and the author of that blog posting) are going to be on a panel about blogging at PiCon in August. I'm also a panelist, and I'm also on that panel. The question is... what the hell am *I* going to have to say after they're done!?!? 0_0 Current Mood: impressed |

One of my fave Buffy quotes... Anya: If you wanna pay e-every bill here, and every bill coming, and have enough to start a nice college fund for Dawn, start charging. Buffy: For what? Anya: Slaying vampires. I mean, you're providing a valuable service to the whole community. I say cash in! Buffy: Well, that's an idea... *you* would have. Any other suggestions? Anya: Well, I mean, it's-it's not *so* crazy. Dawn: Yes it is! You can't charge innocent people for saving their lives. Anya: Spider-Man does. Dawn: He does not. Anya: Does too! Dawn: Does no- Xander? Xander: Action is his reward. |

Fake Beer Dude, lilmartini, you were totally right. Clausthaler is THE best non-alcoholic beer I have ever had. (And I've tried quite a few in my time. Kaliber is okay, but I kind of have to be craving cereal to want to drink it.) So yummy. I'm glad I bought all that place on Pike stocked. Current Mood: pleased |

Dr. Horrible (post is spoiler-free, but spoiler-OK in comments) So. Am I the only one (besides scarlettina who was underwhelmed by this?
