For a day or two, I wasn't in the best of moods. This might be my own fault for taking a break from sculpture.

The news about Jennifer Strange drinking herself to death on frikkin' water is about the saddest, most unfortunate event I've heard of since Maricica Irina Cornici left the planet almost two years ago. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/24/world/main704206.shtml

Jennifer was only trying to win a Wii for her kids and she lost her life. The reports about this story, which - if you want to - you can hear about every half hour, mention that ten people have lost their jobs. Has anyone gotten a Wii for her kids? Do they even still want one?

These kinds of things remind me - regardless of how depressed I might ever get - that I am not the last man in the There's Always Someone Who Has It Worse line. Nor is anyone I personally know.

Indeed. I think periodically we need to be reminded of that, or at least I do.
Still, sometimes I find myself saying, like the Fiddler on the Roof, "Go bless someone else for a while."

I don't get that story. I don't see how it's their fault that she was willing to kill herself for a toy. Personal responsibility, sheesh. As far as I'm concerned, they were kind of jerks, but she was 100% to blame for her own death.

She signed a release. The folks at the station are (as far as I know and at this point) not going to face prosecution. And I'm a little annoyed that my daily coffee has "cuidado caliente" printed on the cup — so I'm with you on the personal responsibility issue.

It's just sad that this kind of thing happens.

I'm mixed on this story. I wonder if she didn't do something to "rig" herself, like take something to keep her from peeing because the amount of water I heard in a report didn't seem like enough fast enough for that. Then again, they could have known something was wrong if she was feeling so badly, couldn't they have gotten her to a doctor or hospital to make sure she was OK.

As for your coffee cup, yeah that is stupid. I would HOPE that the contents are hot and someone who burns themselves on it "deserves" it. You can't legislate common sense - you have to have enough sense to wear a helmet when you ride a motorcycle.

I think I should probably point out that the three links in the lead post are about three different stories. The comments so far are only about the Strange death.
